The first TOLIFE Comic is out now!

In a collaborative effort spearheaded by ISGlobal, a compelling comic has been developed as part of the TOLIFE project, aimed at advocating good lung health and raising awareness about the hazards of tobacco consumption. This initiative involved a diverse array of stakeholders including patients, caregivers, and student groups.

The comic, available in Spanish, Catalan, and English, portrays a man smoking on a park bench amidst lush greenery. As he reminisces about his youthful days playing football, he decides to join a group of kids on the field. Despite showcasing his football abilities, his smoking habit becomes a hindrance, forcing him to stop playing after severe coughing. Inspired by a quote from former football legend Johan Cruyff, the protagonist decides to throw away his cigarettes, symbolizing a transformative journey towards better lung health.

Crafted through a meticulous collaborative process, the comic underscores the importance of making scientific knowledge accessible to the public. It aims to shed light on respiratory diseases and the detrimental effects of tobacco consumption.

The comic’s creation was made possible through the invaluable contributions of various stakeholders, including patient associations and student groups.

Tognetti “TOLIFE final goal is to improve patient’s quality of life”

Alessandro Tognetti, professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pisa and Coordinator of the TOLIFE project, recently conducted an interview shedding light on the project’s progress.

Over the past 18 months, the TOLIFE project has achieved significant milestones. The team has focused on developing smart sensors and a data platform to monitor COPD patients’ daily activities. With pre-trials currently underway, the project stands on the cusp of transitioning from laboratory development to real-world application.

Looking ahead, the project aims to implement its developed technology in the field. By utilizing non-invasive sensors and advanced algorithms, the goal is to enhance the quality of care for COPD patients and improve their overall health outcomes.

TOLIFE Project Joins Digital Health Uptake Platform

The TOLIFE Projects experiences another important step toward success in its journey. Indeed, it has officially been registered in the Digital Health Uptake platform (DHU).

Understanding Digital Health Uptake (DHU)

DHU is a European initiative funded through the Digital Europe Programme, aimed at advancing the adoption and evolution of digital health solutions and services across Europe. It operates through three core pillars: RADAR, KNOWLEDGE COMMUNITY, and ACCELERATOR.

DHU RADAR

At the core of DHU lies RADAR, a platform mandated by the European Commission to serve as a central hub for digital health solutions in Europe and beyond. It offers a unique space for discovering, learning about, and publishing digital health innovations, as well as connecting with other stakeholders in the field. TOLIFE’s registration on the DHU RADAR presents a valuable opportunity to enhance the visibility of our AI solution within the European digital health landscape.

The decision to register TOLIFE on the DHU platform is rooted in the shared commitment to advancing digital health solutions. TOLIFE seeks to clinically validate an AI-driven solution capable of processing daily life patient data captured by unobtrusive sensors. By joining DHU, we gain access to a network of stakeholders, resources, and opportunities that will support our mission to optimize personalized treatment, predict exacerbations, assess health outcomes, and improve the quality of life for COPD patients.

Insights from the TOLIFE Smart Sensors Workshop at CNR, Pisa

In the heart of Pisa, at the esteemed CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche), the “TOLIFE Smart Sensors and Data Collection Platform” workshop unfolded over three enlightening days from January 10 to 12, 2024. This workshop offered a glimpse into the innovative strides being made within the TOLIFE project.

Day 1: Pioneering Protocols and Collaborative Endeavors 

Kicking off the workshop, CNR and the University of Pisa hosted an immersive exploration into crafting meticulous protocols for the “TOLIFE smart sensors and data collection platform” training. The collaborative effort aimed at standardizing procedures marks a significant stride in the journey towards testing innovative healthcare technologies on individuals dealing with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In late February 2024, Clinical Study A will commence preliminary tests on healthy individuals, paving the way for subsequent testing on a selected group of 150 patients (Group A). This cohort will be monitored for 12 months, recording exacerbations and undergoing periodic clinical examinations, serving as vital references for the integrated Artificial Intelligence tools in the TOLIFE platform.

Day 2: Unveiling the TOLIFE Kit

The second day witnessed the unveiling of the comprehensive TOLIFE sensor kit, presented through the “TOLIFE Kit User Manual.” Professor Nicola Carbonaro took center stage, guiding dedicated volunteers through the installation, usage, and recharging processes of these groundbreaking devices. The TOLIFE kit includes a Wifi Router, Smart Mattress Cover with Bedroom Box, Smartwatch, Smartphone, Smart Shoes, and Spirometer.

Day 3: Revolutionizing Data Collection with the TOLIFE Platform

The third and final day delved into the design and technical functionalities of the TOLIFE platform, poised to revolutionize data collection with its smart sensors. The morning began with an in-depth presentation and discussion, setting the stage for a technical panel exploring the diverse functionalities of this innovative platform.

In summary, the TOLIFE Smart Sensors Workshop in Pisa marked a significant leap towards reshaping healthcare through groundbreaking technologies. The collaborative efforts of esteemed institutions, including the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and CNR, promise to usher in a new era of personalized and data-driven healthcare.

TOLIFE, Pioneering Wearable Sensory Intelligence

Despite the ongoing global discourse on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, a groundbreaking initiative, TOLIFE, is taking advantage of this cutting-edge technology to revolutionize healthcare.

In a recent feature in Exl, a magazine dedicated to showcasing excellence in technology, innovation, research, and enterprise, CNR engineer Marco Laurino provides deeper insights into the TOLIFE project.

Funded by the Horizon Europe framework of the European Union, TOLIFE aims to forge a platform that seamlessly integrates non-invasive artificial intelligence and sensor technology. The focus is on advancing the management and personalization of treatments for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Leveraging data from wearable sensors embedded in smartphones, smartwatches, and smart shoes, as well as strategically placed home devices, the project seeks to amass comprehensive Big Data reflecting patients’ daily activities.

This rich dataset, harmonized through a cloud-based platform, undergoes meticulous analysis by sophisticated algorithms. The objective is twofold:

  • to predict early onsets of disease exacerbations;
  • to provide continuous health monitoring for patients.

TOLIFE aspires to implement swift, tailored treatments that not only enhance the quality of life for patients but also contribute to significant reductions in healthcare costs. Spearheaded by the University of Pisa, the project brings together a dynamic, international consortium across multiple disciplines.

The TOLIFE Patient Advisory Group

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a complex chronic condition, characterised by exacerbations that have an impact on the disease progression and patients’ quality of life.

The TOLIFE project aims to develop a clinically validated Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based platform to predict early exacerbations of the disease, and be the base to optimise personalised treatment, assess health outcomes, and improve quality of life.

Within Work Package 1 (WP1), the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients Associations (EFA) is responsible for establishing and managing a Patient Advisory Group (PAG). EFA facilitates the discussion between patients’ experts and researchers and oversees feedback and indications from both patients and caregivers regarding the perceived invasiveness, privacy impact, usefulness and safety of the technology.

TOLIFE PAG: background and role

The Patient Advisory Group, or PAG, consists of patients, caregivers or patient advocates with a keen interest, expertise or experience related to the disease, its treatment or research under discussion. Within the TOLIFE project, the PAG is composed of approximately 10 members from various parts of Europe who are experts in the field of COPD. The PAG members meet regularly with the TOLIFE researchers and clinicians to ensure that the collaborative research project reflects patients’ priorities. In TOLIFE, the PAG is responsible for several key functions:

  • Ensuring a patient-centric approach
  • Ensuring COPD management models address patients’ needs
  • Delivering tangible outcomes for COPD patients

 

The TOLIFE PAG works across different WPs, in a consultative role, providing essential input on patient priorities, data collection, study design, and dissemination. Through their continuous feedback, the PAG members established a strong relationship with the TOLIFE consortium, providing continuous feedback on the development of guidelines, sensors, and evaluation tools for the project. This ensures not only the inclusion of the patients’ perspective across the project, but also that the COPD management models will address patients’ needs and will be understandable for its lay target group.

The Patient Advisory Group is a precious resource and guidance in the TOLIFE project to ensure the project maintains a patient-centric approach for its whole duration.

We are pleased to inform you that a new article of TOLIFE Project is available online now on Repubblica Firenze – Italian Tech, an italian journal focused on innovative Italian technologies. The article entitled “Sensori nel materasso controllano i pazienti” talks about the sensor devices: the shoes, the smartwatch, the mattress, the spirometer+oximeter, all connected to the smartphone that gathers the data and sends them on the TOLIFE cloud platform.

TOLIFE at MAKER FAIRE 2023

On 20-22 October 2023, TOLIFE project was presented at Maker Faire 2023, the European event that facilitates and talks about technological innovation in a simple and accessible way, connecting businesses, Academia, people and ideas. It is a trade fair where industry experts, makers and innovators meet to share their projects with the general public. During the event, Lucia Arcarisi and Carlotta Marinai presented TOLIFE inside the University of Pisa’s booth: a highlight was given to the smart mattress that was presented and tested by the participant. At the end of the event, TOLIFE project received a special mention from the fair organizers based on the innovation the project is bringing to society.
